Native American Heritage Month 2026 Highlights History Culture and Community

Native American Heritage Month is being observed across the United States throughout November 2026. The month recognizes Native histories, cultures, and contributions. A federal interagency website brings together exhibitions, educational materials, and other resources for the public.

The observance runs from November 1 to November 30. Native American Heritage Day falls on Friday, November 27, following Thanksgiving on November 26.

How the month gained national recognition

According to the U.S. Senate Historical Office, New York declared an American Indian Day in 1916. Federal recognition later included Native American Awareness Week in 1976.

In 1990, Congress passed and President George H. W. Bush signed a joint resolution designating November as National American Indian Heritage Month. November has continued to receive national recognition through legislation and presidential proclamations.

Understanding Native identity and sovereignty

The Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Indian advises using a person’s or community’s specific tribal name when possible and following the terminology the community uses for itself.

Tribal identity also has a political dimension. The Bureau of Indian Affairs explains that federally recognized tribes have a government-to-government relationship with the United States and possess inherent rights of self-government.

These distinctions provide essential context when reading about Native communities. An account of one nation’s traditions should identify that nation and the source of the information.

Cultural continuity and the next generation

Running Strong for American Indian Youth describes language revitalization, food sovereignty, and arts programs as areas of its work with Native communities. Examples include the Hupa Language Immersion Nest, the Yuchi Language Project, and the Medicine Root Garden Program.

Readers can consult the organization’s program information to learn about specific initiatives and ways to support its work.

Ways to take part this November

Native American Heritage Month offers opportunities to learn, connect, and make more informed choices. Explore the exhibitions and educational resources on the federal Heritage Month website, read Native authors, or visit a tribal museum.

Discover Native artists through their own websites or authorized outlets. When sharing their work, credit the creator and link to the original source. If attending a public event, check the organizer’s guidance on photography, recording, and participation.

That same attention to people, context, and origins can guide what we choose to bring into our homes. Taking time to understand an item - and who created it - helps us make thoughtful decisions.
