Who We Are And Why the Takenote Was Created

Empower Native Voice (ENV) was founded with the mission of being the voice of the Indigenous community, bringing to light the stories and truths of MMIW victims. We deeply empathize with the pain of families and communities, and we act in the pursuit of justice. Through fundraising projects, awareness events, and legal support, we connect people and spread hope for a more just future.

Understanding the MMIW Crisis: Giving a Voice to Abandoned Families

Violence against Indigenous women and girls, MMIWG, is a crisis that cannot be ignored. Over 84.3% of Indigenous women have experienced violence. 55.5% have been abused by their partners, and 40% of trafficking victims are Indigenous women and girls. The murder rate for Indigenous women is 10 times higher than that of other ethnic groups. 56.1% have faced sexual violence, and 48.8% have been stalked and harassed throughout their lives. These numbers underscore the urgent need for communities to rise up and protect Indigenous women, demanding justice for the missing or murdered victims. We cannot allow these shocking statistics to remain just numbers. Every action you take can lead to significant change in the community and create a more just future for Indigenous women.

These are not just numbers on a report; 5,487 recorded cases, including 4,089 children and 1,398 adults. By the end of 2022, 658 cases remain unresolved. These figures represent lives stolen, families torn apart, and communities devastated. What more can we do to protect them, to ensure that no one else has to live in this pain? Action is something we can no longer delay.

We believe that by raising awareness and connecting communities, we can create real change. This map highlights the states with the highest number of missing Indigenous women and girls, with Alaska reporting 300 cases, and other states like Oklahoma and Arizona also showing alarming numbers. Each figure is a call to action. Let’s do something together today so that no one has to suffer in silence any longer.

        • Finding Justice

I’ve been concerned about MMIW for many years now. I have tried to educate people whenever I can. I’ve personally known a couple of women and it breaks my heart. I’m encourage more these days with more stories being told with films and shows like Reservation Dogs and Fancy Dance. And of course your work. I will keep sharing and the Takenotes will help me. • Powerful

Raising awareness of the history of injustice from the introduction of non native populations to this continent is critical and abhorrent. The plan is detailed to raise awareness and implement the steps to bring people and organizations together to implement the changes necessary for prevention and healing. A must read for everyone and should be introduced in elementary schools.
