The Origin of the Seven Sacred Laws
From the traditions of the Anishinaabe - especially among the Potawatomi and Ojibwe peoples - comes an ancient story of the Seven Grandfathers, sacred beings entrusted with watching over humanity.
In time, the Grandfathers sent a helper to the Earth to find a worthy child, prepared by journeys across the four directions. When the child turned seven, each Grandfather bestowed upon him a spiritual gift: Wisdom, Love, Respect, Courage, Honesty, Humility, and Truth.
As he grew, the boy became a messenger, carrying these sacred gifts back to the people, teaching them how to live in harmony with themselves, with one another, and with the natural world.
Purpose and Deeper Meaning
Guiding people to live the “Good Life”: The Seven Sacred Laws form the foundation for how we treat one another and how we live in balance with the natural world.
Restoring and strengthening cultural identity: Passed down through generations by the Elders, these teachings have adapted to the times while preserving their sacred essence.
A tool for healing and education in today’s world: Many communities, programs, and initiatives embrace the Seven Laws to overcome family violence, heal from trauma, and nurture core values such as self-respect, courage, and love.
